Marching to Success: 4 Stories of Awesomic Female Talents

Yulia

Award-winning designer and illustrator

Yulia has always known she would become a creator. She has enjoyed drawing since she was a little girl, and her innate curiosity encouraged her to explore the world and capture the things, events, and people that inspired her in her artwork.

In August 2022, Yulia won a Red Dot Award with her "The League of Information Warriors" campaign depicting Ukrainian writers, poets, and philosophers carrying weapons and ammunition. In these illustrations, men and women stand side by side and are ready to fight for their land, their ideas, and their future.

"I feel that now, with the full-scale war in Ukraine, all the boundaries between genders have been erased. Both male and female soldiers are now fighting for our freedom. It's a bittersweet feeling to realize that we finally achieved gender equality, but the price to pay is the lives of thousands of people."

As a creator, Yulia believes that a bullet is not as powerful as a word or as art in general. Bullets can kill people, but not their ideas and beliefs.

"If you think about it, all of us have been fighting for our whole life. Every day, you have to prove that you deserve to be heard and valued. I've been in situations where I was underestimated just because I'm a blond easygoing girl. All you have to do is speak up and show the world that your voice matters. That your ideas matter. That what you do is valuable and important. It takes courage to do that."

Alisa

Creator and social media influencer

Alisa’s analytical mindset, paired with a knack for fashion and good taste, was the reason why she decided to pursue UI/UX design. Today, she’s a creator, social media blogger, and restless learner. On her Instagram, Alisa shares her work and life with her followers, and her main aspiration is to inspire people by showing that anything can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

“Most of my followers are from tech, specifically design, because I talk a lot about my work and professional stuff. I was surprised to find out that my audience is pretty evenly split between males and females because I receive a lot more engagement from women. I’d really want my story to be proof that you can become whoever you want to be and make your dreams come true if you believe in yourself.”

However, Alisa’s journey hasn’t always been easy. Graduate in Engineering, she had a hard time finding a job as she wasn’t taken seriously. This is when Alisa realized that being a female in tech is a challenge.

“I’m happy where I am now as design gives me a chance to do what I enjoy most. I can create beautiful things for people and, at the same time, use my analytical skills to achieve the best results. But the world is changing fast, and you have to develop your skills and gain new knowledge all the time. I am learning Webflow development now, and it’s so amazing to see that most of my peers on the course are females, and so is the mentor.”

And that’s another piece of inspiration for Alisa - successful women, especially startup founders and tech experts. The way they manage to balance their work, personal life, hobbies, and personal development is incredible, and Alisa hopes to achieve a lot more driven by their example.

Margo

Webflow developer

Margo is the first and, by far, the only female in Awesomic Webflow community. Back in the days when she had just started exploring the tech world, she was in the minority as well.

"I see that now, more and more women choose tech as their career path, and I'm inspired to see them achieve a lot, invent new approaches, and become true gurus. Sure thing, it can be challenging to be a female developer because there's still bias in society. So you always need to prove that you know your thing."

To become an expert in Webflow, Margo took a course and combined her lessons with studying at the university. It was a real challenge, but her dedication and passion helped her along the way.

"What matters to me is being a professional and constantly developing your skills. Personally, I don't believe that any gender can be more or less capable of excelling in any field. I feel absolutely comfortable in a male-dominated industry. The truth is you have to believe in yourself."

Elizabeth

Digital illustrator and artist

Throughout her life, Elizabeth got a lot of support and inspiration from the females surrounding her. Being an 82-year-old working woman, every morning, Liza's granny cuts fresh flowers from her garden and makes bouquets to decorate her home. And it was Liza's stepmother who noticed the little girl's passion for drawing and art and suggested that she try her hand at design.

"Artists have one big problem: to create, they need to buy materials, and to do that, they need money. "Starving artist" is not a cliche but a reality. That's why you need to come up with a way to make money so you can do what you love."

This year, on March 8, Elizabeth had her first personal exhibition titled "The Way to Freedom," taking place in Kyiv, Ukraine. Just like the title, the artworks created by Liza have multiple layers of meaning: they highlight the importance of freedom to be yourself and to express yourself, the courage to stand up for yourself and speak up, and the freedom of Ukraine.

"At some point in my life, I realized that freedom can't just be taken away from you. This is something that you always have, and you have to fight for it no matter what. And that's when I came up with this idea for my exhibition. I'd been working on it for over a year, and there was one painting that I was constantly re-doing - as my perception of freedom has been changing; it was my self-portrait."

Being a free-spirited artist, Liza does not recognize limitations. Fighting for the right to be herself and to speak up has been part of her journey in the creative industry, and it eventually became a leitmotif of her exhibition.
